Outside, the wind was howling! It could be heard, even inside the spaceship! Mnemon, with much effort, glanced away from the panoramic window. The red, lifeless-like, alien landscape had him mesmerized! He turned around!
Enitharmon, the one in charge of the archaeologists, stood in front of his desk, with an expression of embarrassment, on his face!
-Are you sure? He asked!
-Yes, captain, he said, it is confirmed! There's no shadow of a doubt, they did it to themselves!
- But, how could they do such a thing? Mnemon burst out; the color of his tentacles turning into yellow, a sure sign of mental distress! Is it possible? He asked somberly.
-We gathered evidence from around this planet Enitharmon answered. There is no question. In all my years of service, this is the first time, I've seen, something so horrendous!
The artifact we found seems to contain some sort of sound. We found it, among a pile of debris; near the excavation site no 5.It took us three days to decipher it. It' seems to be a collection of stories, fused with sound. They were called songs. It refers to the events that led to... to this situation!
-Hmmm, can you translate it for me, Mnemon asked?
-Of course! Enitharmon said, I have a full written report ready!
-Spare me the details, Enitharmon, just give it to me in brief, Mnemon said.
-Of course captain! The artifact contains a series of ... songs.
The first song is called "A letter from Patmos" and it is written in an ancient language. The verses were taken from an old book, by that particular race, called "Revelation". A collection of prophecies, I believe, about the end of their world.
A LETTER FROM PATMOS
"Earth! Earth!" "Et vidi, et ecce equus albus,
qui sedebat super illum, habebat arcum et data
est ei corona, exivit vincens ut vinceret!
Et exivit alius equus rufus et qui sedebat
super illum datum est ei
ut sumeret pacem de terra et invicem
se interficiant, datus est ei
gladius magnus Et ecce equus pallidus
Et qui sedebat super eum nomen
nomen illi mors infernus sequebatur
eum data est, illi potestas super partes terrae
interficere gladio fame et morte morte et bestiis terrae!!!
Et vidi cum aperuisset sigillum sextum et
terrae, motus factus est magnus et sol factus est niger!
Silence fell over the room; only the distant cry of the wind could be heard, from a distance!
-During the last days of this planet, Enitharmon said, as the desert spread, the last remnants of this race took refuge, in a granite castle. It seems that, right before the end, they discovered their lives were dominated by the wrong principles and they regretted they did nothing to prevent their doomsday... but it was ...
Mnemon sighed, as he said!
THE DEATH CHAMBER
Under a huge angry red, sun
lies the castle, in this waste land!
the ancient castle of Man's old times,
built to last but now it' s crumbling!
In her private chambers Lies! our mother queen,
on her bed of pain, slowly dying!
Our mother's tears floods, that drown the land!
our mother's cries, storms of rain and sand!
Nowhere is safe for us now! as the waters claim their prey!
as the Ocean drowns the earth! We' ve got no place to go!
Our mother's fever scorches, the yellow sand!
As wild fires rage, the hot air's burning, our lungs!!
Each breath is a torture! Every breath that I take!
Capito, by her side! Exploito, with an innocent smile!
Authorio, looks full of sorrow, while he sneaks the poison in her cup!
Pseudopriests! of the vicious eye, worshippers, of the pyramid eagle!
slowly kill our reverend mother, while we stare with blind eyes!
Heavily smell the burning candles,
in the room, where no light enters,
the treacherous men join their forces
ready to give the final blow!
Darkness fell over the land!
Silence! under the setting red Sun!
People are praying on their knees!
to late crying for our deadly sins!
Mnemon took a deep breath!
-And what about the next one? he asked in a low voice!
It seems that their societies were based on the concept of profit Enitharmon started to say..
Mnemon interrupted and asked.
-What is profit?
-Something found, only in this race. In order to offer his services to society, the individual human expected to be rewarded with a material substance.
--Don't we all have to offer to society, in order to function? And the society will provide all we need?
- Evidently, they thought an individual has to earn something more, than his needs, when he does something for society, producing goods, or transporting them, or offering his skills.
- They used a kind of transaction unit, called money! He who possessed them could do anything he wanted! He could even have more than he needed!
-For what reason?
-I really cannot answer this question. It is beyond my understanding!
-"Money"! What about those, who could not collect, what you called "money"? The sick ones, the incompetent ones? The simple minded? Even the lazy ones, did they starve to death?
-To my understanding they must've passed difficult times.
IN GOD WE TRUST?
Lie! Grow! in the dirt! in the mud! The eye of greed is looking!
The pyramid soars above! The old king's tomb is blocking the sun,
Hiding the light of love! You can't see God through mud!
You can't! Cannot see God! The blind man cowers, in fear!
The blind man weeps, in tears! The voiceless screams, in silence!
Sharing his pit with pigs and rats! The snake is looking at us!
Its cold golden skin is freezing our hearts! Between burning crosses,
We march through the emperor's land! Carrying gifts and bribes!
We watch our brothers burn, while the tyrant smiles!
"Darkness!" said the blind man! "Since I crawl in the mud, I can see no light!
All I can feel is sickness! and all I can say is lies! All I can smell is blood on my hands!
And all I can feel is guilt, guilt in my mind"
Enitharmon broke the awkward silence.
-I think they made experiments with their food also! The people, who manufactured these products, mutated them, to obtain more profit!
-They poisoned their own food, Mnemon asked, so they could earn more? They gave poison to themselves and their own children? I cannot comprehend this!
-I think they were giving these "products" to the children of others!
Mnemon took a deep breath, and Enitharmon feared, he might suffer a heart attack, at any moment! He decided to stay silent, for a while, and let the song speak for itself!
In the endless rows, on the market shelves,
the products of Midas, passed down by his sons,
Full of synthetics and hormones in Code!
they lie on the shelves, waiting to take them all away!
Whatever you take you cannot eat!
This is the curse the Midas' touch.
Dazed by the colours, Like mosquitoes and flies
We take by the hand these poisonous foods!
the illness will come in a century of tears!
they tell you it's safe! while no one can live for so long!
as cancer grows within us all!
This is the curse, the Midas' touch!
Famine! Disease! the children dead!
Poverty reigns! this broken world!
Hunger to claim our brother's lives!
mourning their fate! in silent cries!!
Drawn to the light! Like a moth in the night,
she goes to the candle and a fiery demise!
We swallow the poison with ignorant smiles!
Synthetically grown, to fill the needs,
of greedy mouths! Whatever we touch
is all too much! This is the curse
The Midas' touch! Whatever we touch
is in reverse! In our modern world this is the curse!
-The next song is about war!
-War what is this?
-A kind of mass killing!.For these creatures, if murder was at a mass scale, it was called war, and the participation in it was called pride!
Enitharmon did not continue as Mnemon was evidently overwhelmed with sorrow.
Trapped in these alleys, Of a thousand turns,
You feel exposed and weak! While glances of hate,
Behind closed windows, Send ice through your spine!
Stack in the middle Of this medieval town
With a rifle in hand! You look for snipers!
For suicide bombers! And for whispering sounds!
So far from home! The thoughts tear like a knife!
Your father's look and your mother's wet eyes!
"be careful my son Our thoughts are always be with you
be careful my son! in God's forsaken land!"
Narrator: "An envelope on the table, a friendly pat on the shoulder,
the letters blurred in front of your eyes then melted and dropped to the floor
the page went blank!" Mother drowned home
when the hurricane hit! the waters went high,
sinking her dreams forever! Father was found dead!
A floating body Carried away
On the same streets he was cleaning,
Like a slave all his life! Shadows surround you!
With frightening smiles! They try to steal your soul!
Daemons from hell! Dig a hole in your head!
Try to get in and set it on fire! Armies of faceless dead!
Parade in the sky, In pale battalions!
Beneath the ground in a coffin their dreams!
shattered in pieces! Just like broken limbs!
Shouts of rage and pain Are reeking the Earth
Filled with insanity! The room is red
it's smelling of death when the night came it ended the nightmare!
-It's enough for one day, Mnemon finally said, we'll continue tomorrow!
Next day, he looked much better, but his movements indicated a lack of sleep!
-You remember war, we mentioned yesterday? Enitharmon said.
Mnemon nodded yes!
-The creatures used weapons of low radiation in their wars! Enitharmon said.
-Don't be fool! There is no such thing. Either there is radiation or there is not!
-Not for them! They considered the weapons under a certain level of radiation to be quite harmless.
-They dropped these devices in distant territories. And they believed to be safe!
The days of war were long time ago!
the days of mourn were just a memory!
the joy of life cast the dark
shadows of death! and the deep old wounds
were healed by time! I remember the days
when we played as kids knights and Queens
in the ruins of town! the darkened walls,
were the mighty castles, as we were fighting
dragons in the skyl! When I close my eyes
I can see you alive, smiling at me!
when I said to you, I'm afraid of the darkness!
The clouds hung black and so angry above!
when I first held you in my arms!
that autumn was stormy violent and warm!
and we were happy in our lovely home!
when we believed that nothing can touch us!
nothing can stand between you and me!
When the winter came, on a fateful morning!
You woke up pale! your nose bleeding bad!
With feverish eyes, you looked at me!
All of them said, All of the doctors said!
it was too late!! It was always too late for you!
it was too late when Uranus's curse my love
years ago fell from a relentless sky!
Radio Days! Shattered my life!
Radio Days! Ruined my life!
-This song refers to an epidemic, the archaeologist said; they themselves brought to their race, by producing an artificial virus. The virus leaked, it contaminated a whole city and in the end they had to detonate a nuclear device, to prevent the contamination from spreading!
